Different types of Engineered Wood, application and Benefits

  • 21 October, 2018

Engineered wood or plywood (as commonly known to us), has variousother names such as composite wood, man-made wood or manufactured wood. It plays a significant role in building works, interior décor, furniture manufacturing, construction, etc. Engineered wood ismanufactured by binding or fixing the particles, strands, veneers, fibers, or boards of wood using adhesives and other gluing materials.

Engineered wood comes in a vast variety of grades, thickness and standard sizes to suit vast majority of designs and are used for host of different purposes such as building homes, commercial spaces, furniture, interior designs, industrial applications and many others. There are multiple kinds of engineered wood available to suit different applications and budgets.

Let us understand a little moreabout engineered wood, their applications and benefits :

1) Blockboards:

Blockboard is made up of softwood strips and veneers and is manufactured by placing softwood strips edge to edge. They are sandwiched between veneers and then glued together under high pressure.

These are generally used to make doors, paneling, and partition walls. It is mostly used when a long piece of wood is required which makes the furniture stiffer and prevent it from bending. While using Blockboards, always take care that the core of the wood runs lengthwise to achieve its maximum strength.

Benefits –

  • Light Weight
  • Easy to cut
  • Good Resistance to warping

Applications –

  • Long book shelves
  • Tables and Benches
  • Single and double beds
  • Lengthy wall panels
  • Doors

2) Particle wood

Particle Board is a relatively new type of engineered wood product that is made from gluing together small chips and saw-dust and then firmly pressing them together to make boards or sheets. Owing to economical pricing of particle board, affordable furniture has become more abundantly available in the market. Following are its benefits and applications.

Benefits –

  • Light Weight
  • Cost efficient
  • It is perfect for readymade furniture

Applications –

  • Used in furniture manufacturing
  • Used for wooden floors
  • Used for wooden walls

3) MDF or Medium-density fibreboard

MDF or Medium-density fibreboard wood is made by compressing wood fiber and resin. Although it ismade up of separated fibers, itcan be used as a building material. It is basically wood fiber based panels.

Benefits –

  • It is denser and stronger than the particle wood
  • It doesn’t have any splinters
  • It can be easily painted

Applications –

  • Used for storage units
  • Used to make drawer sets

4) Plywood

Plywood is the earliest developed, time-tested, most durable and strongamong all the engineered woods. It is also the most commonly used one. Plywood is manufactured by bonding layers (plies)of veneer (cross-grained) under appropriate heat and pressure with durable and moisture resistant adhesives. Plywood is manufactured in standard sizes with varying thicknesses. There are various grades of plywood such as MR, BWR, Marine, etc. to suit different applications. This variation in grades and thicknesses allows a user to choose the plywood which is most suitable for the intended application such as furniture manufacturing, interiors of an office, home or commercial space, construction, etc.

Benefits –

  • Strong material
  • Less water damage
  • Multiple thickness available

Applications –

  • Boats
  • Tables
  • Cupboards
  • Houses
